Our Vision

Our Mission

The Centre for Eco-Cultural Studies (CES) is dedicated to exploring and preserving the intricate balance between nature and culture. Our primary mission is to conduct comparative eco-cultural studies to develop sustainable resource management practices that benefit both traditional agricultural communities and the natural environment across the Sri Lanka. Our research focuses on fostering community participation and collaboration to prevent habitat degradation, particularly within wildlife protected areas, and to address the growing demand for forestlands and combatting against the wildlife crime.

CES main Field research station and interpretation centre is strategically located around the Sigiriya Wildlife Sanctuary and the UNESCO World Heritage Site, with proximity to the Minneriya-Giritale Nature Reserve and National Park. CES also mange 3 other field research bases in bordering to Yala National Park, Sinharaja Rainforest and World Heritage Site and in Kala vava proposed National Park.

To be a leading center of excellence in eco-cultural research and sustainable development, fostering harmonious coexistence between human communities and the natural environment in Sri Lanka and beyond.

 1. Research and Innovation.

Conduct comparative eco-cultural studies to develop and implement sustainable resource management practices that benefit both traditional agricultural communities and the natural environment.

2. Community Engagement.

Foster active community participation and collaboration to prevent habitat degradation, protect wildlife, and address the growing demand for forestlands.

3. Conservation and Revitalization.

Revitalize traditional enterprises such as non-timber forest products and handicrafts, and promote sustainable harvesting and ecological farming practices.

4. Combating Wildlife Crime.

Implement and support measures to combat wildlife crime through legal advocacy, ensuring the protection and preservation of endangered species and habitats.

5. Education and Awareness.

Raise awareness and educate the public on the importance of preserving Sri Lanka's eco-cultural heritage through outreach programs, workshops, and interpretive centers.

6. Policy Advocacy.

Advocate for effective legal, political, and social measures to ensure the sustainable use and conservation of natural resources within protected areas and beyond.

Protect Environmental

A wide range of education and awareness programs have been launched to promote environmental conservation in Sri Lanka.

Wildlife Crime Combat

Wildlife Crime Combat Programme investigates wildlife crime with special emphasis on the abduction of animals.

Become a Volunteer

CES offers a limited number of volunteer programs per year for research students and interested individuals.
